SPF - Shaun Style

This week while the lovely Kristine takes a break - Shaun has stepped in as the substitute teacher (I won't tell you what we used to do to subs - lets just say it wasn't nice - gasp I know what you are thinking...."Cheeky not nice?")

Oh and I am sorry Shaun the credit card thing ummmm I need to keep that for my little shopping adventure - but nice try..hehe

#1 Something with a story behind it: My Georges

















The smaller George was given to me by my Daddy when I was about 4 years old. My original one just could not stand repair and so we had to box him up for future loving (we still have him in a box). This George slept with me until my 3rd year of marriage and then was banned when Mr. Cheeky rolled over in the middle of the night to kiss me and kissed the George - then came the ultimatum - him or the George (let me tell ya that was a really tough call). A few years ago, my Mom got me the big one as a gag gift for Christmas! I LOVE IT! Now the two Georges reside with the man child and he takes really good care of them because he knows they belong to me. (Shhhh...here is a secret for ya....when Mr. Cheeky travels - George comes back..hehe).

Thursday Thirteen - Randomness

The theme for most of my posts this week has been just random things and well I think I will just stick with that (I have so much rattling around in this head of mine).

#1 - I have to say that I was super proud of my little man child this week. He had some dental work done and he handled it really well - didn't fight or move around too much. He made me go in with him and I was in the corner, sweating, cringing, and over just having a panic attack (I HATE THE DENTIST - can't stand the noise, have to knock me out!). So BRAVO to the man child!!

#2 - I am excited about my trip to Charleston and possibly having coffee with Patti (if she is there that week - woohoo I get to meet a blogger IRL!

#3 - I have so much to do over the next couple of days and it almost seems overwhelming (with blogging and all I don't see how its all going to get done....a girl has got to have her priorities).

#4 - Remember that day of interviews last week? Two of them were on site this week and they look very very promising....woohoo!

#5 - The teenage daughter has been in basketball camp all week. She was a little concerned about it, but she is doing well.

#6 - I am going to the newly opened KISS Coffeehouse in Myrtle Beach on my trip next week. Think I might have a French Kiss Vanilla Frozen Rockucino!

#7 - I need to go shopping for some new clothes after losing some poundage - might try to do that over the weekend.

#8 - I haven't been sleeping well this week - I am starting to get concerned (see the 100 things post from May to know what I am talking about here).

#9 - I bought a new gel seat for the teenage daughter's bike so when I ride it in the mornings - my bootay doesn't hurt as much.

#10 - I am cat sitting two siamese kitties next week - should be interesting to see how my kitty reacts - I think she is the jealous type - and these new kitties are snugglers.....hmmm.....

#11 - Angry Dad tells me I need to start singing some more modern songs....I will have to work on that.

#12 - I had a dream about Keanu Reeves this morning when I finally fell asleep.

#13 - I am thinking this post wasn't as creative as I would have liked - just being lazy this week.

How do you know when its time.....

When you first lay eyes on them it is literally love at first sight. You bring them home and love them, care for them like a member of your family. They bring a little smile to your face when you wake up, and they are there to comfort you at the end of a long hard day. They are with you through the good times and the bad. You can count on them to bring a joy into you life when things are otherwise not so bright.

As time moves on, they get a little older but that doesn't mean you love them any less. You know each other. The little quirks, what makes each other feel good - you understand each other. But eventually, as old age increasingly sets in, their little bodies just can't take it anymore. You know that while there will be others, there will never be another that can truly take their place. And you wonder.....how do you know when its time to *sniff sniff* dispose of those wonderful sandals?

Nothing like grilling in the rain

I love grilled food. Last night I wanted grilled chicken so I prep the chicken with wonderful Tuscan spices, the grill is hot and ready to go. Yeah, its a little cloudy but no big deal. I go out and put the chicken on the grill and come back in and the bottom falls out. Ever see that crazy person out in the rain/snow grilling? Yeah, that would be me.

Where was Cheeky Friday? and Weekend Update!

I need to whine about Friday but I am going to try and be as vague as possible. Generally, I like this person that frustrated me so much its just this person's working style that drives me NUTS!. I don't want to spin myself up again (or bore you too much) so I will try to make this brief.

Late during the work day on Thursday (like 6ish) this person called me in a panic. Information was due the following day and this person had completely forgotten about it. The information was due at 9 am Friday morning. Now, all of my information was in there - this person just needed to use a simple formula to gather and report (no big deal).

I got up at 5:30 to go back through and make sure everything was ready for this person (instead of working out) because I am just nice like that (a serious fault of mine). This person calls me at 6 and it goes on from there. I am preparing for a 10am meeting and this person keeps calling and interrupting me. So I am not prepared for the meeting like I should be.

After this person completes the information, I ask to get a copy (I ask several times during the day). I have a report due at 5 and needed the information. It is now 4:45 and still no information. I email our boss saying "I know so and so is really busy can you forward it to me" (I could have slammed her but I didn't - I was nice). I get the info and it is WRONG WRONG WRONG! I knew as soon as I saw it that it was wrong. Most of my work had been cut out. The information was there this persons formulas were wrong. I immediately get back on the phone to work it out which makes MY report late, and our bosses report WRONG. So I stay on the phone with this person to get it worked out the way it should have been that morning. It was very frustrating. It would be ok if it only happened once in a while - but this person does this sort of thing all the time. So, now because this person can't do it right quarterly, this person gets to do it every freakin week!!! Which means this person will be calling me and ruining my Fridays Every Freakin Week!!

By the end of the day, I just needed a drink! We had a BBQ to go to down in St. Paul at a friend's house and even though I was really tired and irritated I went. I am glad I did - we had a great time! Got home around 1am (its a long drive to St. Paul).

Saturday - slept in a little. It's OFFICIAL - 20 lbs!!!! (woohoo - happy dance happy dance) Did some ebay. Got groceries for the week (because the kids can eat you out of house and home). Big storms formed all around us and then collapsed down in our area - the clouds were really cool! Had a run in with some neighbors down the street (more on that later - but all I have to say now is - don't mess with a red necks from the south - we have our ways of revenge). Went for my long power walk. Then just vegged out and watched a scary movie on HBO.

Sunday - slept in again (wow 2 days in a row). Again, generally lazy in the morning. Did some more ebay stuff. Mr. Cheeky went fishing with some friends, the kids went bowling with the neighbors and I stayed home with my CD's and scrap booked (and got several pages done - I am so proud...hehe). Skipped the walk but will have to make up for it today.

Today....lots of things to do for work but hopefully not as bad as Friday. Slept really good last night and I am in a rockin mood this morning. I think I am in the mood for a little ....Huey Lewis and the News!

Thursday Thirteen - I want it and I want NOW

This week's Thursday Thirteen is dedicated to all those out there in blog land that like to forward those spam emails (you know the ones I am talking about). Thirteen reasons you should not forward spam.

#1 - I keep getting ripped off! Bill Gates, AOL and countless other still owe about a million dollars for forwarding their emails. I mean it is really hard work to forward these things and if they don't hurry up and pay me my money, I am going to have to get nasty and get me an attorney.

#2 - It clogs up my email. Now come on, if its funny or going to pay me money then by all means you can send it.

#3 - It can make your computer sick. Have you ever tried to give your computer its cough medicine? I mean it is worse than getting kids to take it. And don't even get me started on de-worming. But if those guys in #1 would hurry up and pay me my money, then I could at least afford a shot or a vaccine for my computer.

#4 - People don't take out the 1/2 mile of additional email addresses from where it has been forwarded half a million times. OK, Bill or AOL might need this information (but they ain't gonna pay) but I don't.

#5 - I get bamboozeled. I can't tell you how many times I have forwarded some little mantra or totem that will promise me years of good luck or a windfall of money and it's just not happening (didn't you read #1? - if I was gonna get money I would have it by now).

#6 - Where are my free food gift certificates (Applebee's, Olive Garden, etc.). I mean come on, if Bill & AOL aren't going to pay me then I need something to feed the kiddies.

#7 - I never knew that I had so many royal relatives in Nigeria. Wow - I am royalty. Sorry to hear that some long lost Uncle has died - but I didn't know him anyway - so just send me my money. A cashier's check will do, you don't need my account information.

#8 - Pre-approved home loans - WOW! Really? Where were you when I needed you? But then again if Bill & AOL would just get off their butts - I am mad now - hand me the yellow pages and a phone.....

#9 - Free Psychic Readings - hmmmm maybe she can tell me how much I am gonna win in my lawsuit against Bill and AOL hmmmm....

#10 - College Degrees - Ummm no thanks I already have one but do you think I can get one for the teenage daughter? That way she can just stop school now and start working with her Doctorate Degree in hand and make us some money (dialing the phone....Bill you are in trouble now...)

#11 - Hot Singles looking for love - ummmm NO! If I had the money I was promised they would be searching ME out (the attorney thinks so too.)

#12 - Ephedra, Viagra, Phentermine without a prescription. What?! You trying to tell me something??

#13 - Free computer, laptop, or cell phone - why?, so you can send me MORE emails from Bill & AOL? (the attorney says - I have a strong case all I have to do is send this out to 100 friends and I am golden).

Not a really exciting or witty post...it is what it is

I don't know why I do this to myself. Today is back to back to back interviews. It wouldn't be quite so bad if technical guys had a personality but sometimes they can be so dry and getting information out of them is like pulling teeth. It is totally refreshing to actually find a geek with a personality (and I use the term in a completely good way - true geeks are proud of their geekdom).

Got up at 5 this morning, did the bike thing again for a couple of miles. Showered. Already sent a few emails and getting ready to make pancakes for when the kids get up. The first interview starts at 7:30am central time they go pretty steady until mid afternoon.

On a happier note - bought my tickets to Charleston yesterday (woohoo) and Mommy K's ticket for the return (I am such a good friend..hehe). The really hard part about this trip is not eating too much and ruining my progress thus far. I intend to spend some time on the beach and just sit and listen to the waves (and get sunburned in the process - OH not that intend on getting sunburned but putting this pale body on the beach - it is gonna happen).

This evening I am going walking again but I have to do it early enough to get back and watch America's Got Talent - I am thinking this is going to be a modern version of the Gong show (anybody remember that?). I loved that show as a kid and the unknown comic with the paper bag on his head. Not sure how good it will be - but I am curious so I will be watching.

Random Stuff (too many things going on in this head)

First and foremost......

Thanks to those who showed me some sympathy for my poor mangled toe (and for those of you who lurked about but didn't leave comments...hehe). As the day progressed, the more I thought about it the more I didn't want to "not exercise" and get back in to a rut. So, against my better judgement - I slathered on the neosporin+pain (hehe), wrapped it in layers of gauze, then taped it up and proceeded to get my butt out and walk. Wasn't as fast as I would have liked and toward the end I thought I had just made a serious mistake but overall I don't think I did anymore damage. I tried to put more pressure on the outside of my foot when I walked. (Thanks to Fantastagirl for the product suggestion - I will look for that today when I am out). This morning instead of walking (only going to do that in the evening for a while until it heals completely) I rode the teenage daughter's bike for a couple of miles (in the low gear thank you very much). It was nice to mix it up, gave my foot a break - but was a serious pain the BUTT - literally! (sorry - no pics for that one...hehe).


In a few weeks I am heading back to Charleston!! (woot woot!) I am going to go down for a looooong weekend, visit my job, get my wireless fixed on my laptop cause we have the world's greatest computer guru and he is gonna hook me up! Would love to name him here and sing his praises - but I know some of you out there might just start stalking him for his genius (hehe) - but if he reads this, he knows who I am talking about. What is really exciting, is that when I return back to Minnefreakinsota (no I am not excited about returning - geesh keep reading) I am going to kidnap my girl Mommy K and little baby Duncan and bring them back with me! She will be here for my B-day! (oh yeah, more on that later but keep and eye on the ticker to your right - gifts are appreciated - and ummm expected..hehe). Also, I am trying to kidnap one of the teenage daughter's friends to bring back with me too. Although she may not be able to come which will be a total bummer!


Update on the kids and their chore list: I have to say that I am quite amazed that they have taken to this quite well. They get up asking what their list is for the day. Sometimes the want to know the night before so they can plan ahead....what!? you say.....you read that right - they are actually planning ahead. Super Nanny ain't got nothin' on Cheeky! Sometimes they do the bonus chores for $$ sometimes they don't - its their choice.


Its gonna be a really stormy day today. I am excited about that (you know me and storms). It was nice and sunny at 5 this morning when I was out torturing my butt, however now it is getting dark and the temp has dropped. If they are really good - I will try to get some pics to share. And if I see the neighbor running out to go chase something - don't think I won't be jumping in the truck with him (hehe - guess I should warn him).

No Beauty without PAIN

Warning: at the end of this post is a graphic picture of pain (in the words of the teenage daugher "ewww Mom...gross").

You know the term "No Pain - No Gain"? Well my friends, it is true. In my quest to get rid of this massive object I call "the bootay", I have been starting to do some real exercise (yeah I know - that is worse than any four letter word I can think of). I have been doing some serious power walking daily - about 2 1/2 miles - sometimes twice daily. Well, in the process, I have developed a serious blister on my right toe (the left one also has a blister but not as big). So in my infinite wisdom I thought, "hmm what if I tape it up? Then it shouldn't be so bad and have an opportunity to heal". Yeah, right - what was I thinking? Taping, while it helped with the actual walking, just caused it to burst. OK, well it will heal in a few days right? WRONG! While at the lake yesterday (we went both days) my foot got wet, the skin over the blister ripped and now.....well its just ugly and painful (see the pic below...yeah I know ewww... Mom... gross). I had to get the remaining skin off cause it was just hanging there - the man child came up to me and said "umm Mom you might not want to pick at that" - Hey who is the parent here?? hehe. So now walking is OUT until it heals. Ugh - but I guess I could do those dreaded lunges (oh no I didn't just say that did I? Someone call the doc - I must be out of my mind...hehe).

Cheeky - who wonders - if you can't have beauty without pain, will she be stunning when this toe heals? (cause its seriously painful)

Stop the POUNDING!!!

Have you ever had a headache soooo bad that it hurts to close your eyes? That is what happened to me last night. I went to sleep and woke up the the most massive headache in my tempels and behind my eyes. I mean it was incredibly massive. Not like a migraine (I have had those). I took 800 milligrams of motrin and it still did not let up for another 2 hours. Once it let up a little (around ummm 4:30 this morning) I was able to get back to sleep for a while (still tossed and turned).


On a happier note, I have lost a total of 17 pounds!!!!!! OH YEAH!! Last night I forced Mr. Cheeky to take me out to dinner and while I was getting dressed up (cause I rarely do that anymore) I put on a shirt and a pair of pants I haven't worn in quite a while (cause they were too tight) and they were a little on the loose side and the shirt - well let's just say I looked GOOD! (hehehe)


Cheeky - who is heading out to the lake today - might do some swimming, might do some fishing, might do some riding in a boat!

Thursday Thirteen - Can't get it anymore

Today's Thursday Thirteen is a list of things that I can't get up here in Minnefreakinsota. Now of course, I stock up when I go home to visit, or Mom is more than willing to ship these items, but its not the same as just being able to go to the grocery store and pick it up for yourself.

#1 Texas Pete Hot Sauce - if you have been reading the blog for very long - you have heard me talk about this before. There are even pictures dedicated to this stuff....LOVE IT!

#2 Duke Mayo - There is nothing like it! I don't like Kraft or Hellman's - I am Duke's girl through and through!

#3 Merita Sandwich Bread - Ahhh the sweet softness of fresh baked Merita Bread....mmmmm. Now I am stuck with whatever I can find up here - nothing compares to Merita though.

#4 Penrose Hot Sausages - I learned to love these from my Granddaddy James Perdue when I was a little girl. They come in a jar off the shelf - its really hard to explain them. Of course they are bad for you (but what great food isn't) and I would only get them every now and then for a little treat.

#5 - Hot Dog Chili - come on people - hot dogs need chili. Now I can find canned chili here without beans but its not like the hot dog chili I find in the south - I have learned to make due.

#6 - Grits - REAL grits - not the instant stuff.

#7 - Fresh Seafood - well DUH! But again I am learning to make due.

#8 - Neese's Liver Pudding (or as we call it in NC - Livermush or smush)) - now before you start saying "ewww gross, nasty", it may have liver in it but it does NOT taste like liver. It is a breakfast meat and comes in a rectangle and you slice it, fry it and enjoy...best way to describe it would be to say its a type of sausage (but not really).

#9 - Hush Puppy Mix - can't get them in restaurants and you can't have them at home if you can't find the mix (sure I can do the "from scratch" thing but there are some wonderful mixes out there).

#10 - Fat Back - again before you start saying "ewww what is this hillbilly red neck eating" it is used as a seasoning in cooking. It comes from a pig (much like bacon) but it is salt cured and used when cooking dried beans or other wonderful southern food. You don't eat it - but the dog loves it when you discard it from cooking. They have "salt pork" up here but its not the same.

#11 - Wink - this is a tangy grapefruit flavored soft drink that you can drink on its own or used as a mixer. Again, I didn't get it often but just every now and then as a treat. It is really refreshing on a hot day.

#12 - Sonny's Sweet BBQ Sauce - it is really yummy. Now I like all kinds but this is really good to have around the house for grilling. For real BBQ (you know pulled pork BBQ or a pig pickin) I like a good vinegar based sauce....you just don't get that around here.

#13 - Sweet Sixteen Donuts - these sweet little powdered sugar covered delights are made by Merita Bread so of course I can't get them....but mmmmm.....donuts!

Six Degrees of Separation

Ever hear of it? Do you believe it? Well let me tell you something ladies....I am now one degree away from our man Matthew McConaughey!!!! Yes, you heard me right. I just found out that my cousin rode a plane from Savannah to Houston with him last week. Can you believe it?!? I almost fell off the couch when I found out! And while it was an encounter and not really a completed link - its still counts!

Oh I am also, one degree away from Seann W. Scott (Stifler of American Pie fame). One of my new friends up here went to high school with him. Her dad was his coach and he always calls when he is town. Of course I told her when he comes up again, we are having a party (maybe Minnefreakinsota ain't so bad after all...hehe).

Oh, there are others too. One of my best friend's hubby is a chef in the White House. I have a friend whose sister is married to a member of Steppenwolf. One of the mothers from the teenage daughter's softball team in SC is Jesse James' cousin. So here is the question, why is it always someone else that meets these people and not ME?? OK OK, I did meet Reggie White when I was flying to California. I sat next to him (in first class because my friends at the airlines hooked me up) and talked to him on the way to our layover in Chicago. He was a really nice man. Huge, massive but nice.

Just because school is out doesn't mean you don't have to work (umm learn)

School was officially out last Thursday. I work from home and I am always on the phone. I can't have all this commotion going on (house phone ringing constantly, door bell ringing constantly, kids running in and out, kids always eating) so I have decided to STOP THE INSANITY!

I have developed several rules for the summer and they will be followed or you will incur the wrath of Mom! (said with thunder rolling and lighting striking in the background). I am like the Hulk (yes I am incredible too) don't make me angry - you won't like me when I am angry.

Kitchen Rules - follow them or go hungry! (these are also hanging on the fridge in case you forget)

Breakfast will be served between the hours of 8:00 and 9:30. If you sleep past that too bad you have to wait for lunch.

Lunch will be served between the hours of 11:30 and 1:00. If you miss lunch because you are still sleeping or too busy to come in and eat, I can't help ya there.

Snacks will be served between 3:30 and 4:00 (these are not required but if you are going to have a snack it will be a healthy one).

All dishes, food, trash, etc. will be cleaned up and put away after each meal (by you, not me).


Chores list

Monday through Friday you will have your own chore list that must be completed prior to playing outside, going to friend's houses, or asking to do anything.

Each day there is a major project and several smaller maintenance projects to be done. These are expected to be done without asking for or expecting compensation (I already house you, feed you, run your Limo service and countless other things so that my dear children is compensation enough).

Each day there are "bonus" chores that are age appropriate and can be done for cash. If you think you want to do some extra stuff this summer, I suggest you take me up on the bonus chores which can earn you up to $25 per week. Bonus chores cannot be done until all regular chores are completed and have been inspected and checked off by me (yeah, the task master). You can also earn additional $$ by doing things just because they need to be done (that means without having to be told).

Weekends are free days but if you were smart you would keep the regular things straightened up to save you from having to work harder during the week.


Dinner Preperation

You, my dear children, are also going to learn the art of cooking. A couple of days a week you will be responsible for preparing the evening meal. You must work together with your sibling to accomplish this task. In the beginning, you will work with me in preparing certain staple meals that we have regularly. Then, you will slowly start taking over and I will step to the sidelines. Eventually, you will be able to prepare these meals on your own. Once you have mastered a couple meals, new ones will be added so you will have a variety from which you can choose. Then, as the summer progresses....you will be responsible for the weekly meal planning and make sure that items you need (and you will know what these are because you will have already prepared them several times) are purchased at the grocery store in advance.

SOMETHING FUNKY IS GOING ON

OK here is the deal - one of my blog friends that I read, comment, chat, and sometimes email with just asked me if I sent her an email. NO I haven't emailed anyone in blog land today except EA and Gracie. I got an email that I thought was from a fellow blogger and when you open the email (not an attachment but merely open the text itself) it redirects to some strange site that does not show up. I saw lots of bloggers in the forward lines of the email there that I recognized from having read or commented on the blogs.

I don't know if there is a worm, virus, bot or what the crap there is floating out there in blog land but I wanted to let you know something weird is going on. Maybe this is why blogger kept screwing up. Maybe someone has put something out there...I sure hope not cause that would suck!

I have done spy bot and virus checks on my PC and they are clean. But I wanted to send this out as an FYI just in case. If you hear of anything of what this is, please let me know.

Weekend Update......Cheeky taking it to the HNL (read post of explanation)

Well lets see.....What did I do this weekend??? Hmmm a whole lot of nothing! Well I did do some things but only if I wanted to (hehe).

Had a wonderful dinner Friday night. Stayed up really late and watched Candyman for like the 100th time (it was on cable). Candyman....candyman...candyman....opps better stop hehe.

Slept in Saturday morning and that was really really nice. Not that I had the opportunity to sleep in but I was able to sleep in. That my friends is a wonderful thing. Got up, had breakfast with the family. Spent a while uploading pics from Memorial weekend to Target so I could just go pick them up instead of going and standing in line..blah blah blah. My intent was to get them and do a lot of scrapbooking. Ran some errands, dropped the teenage daughter off at a party, picked up my pics and headed home. Spent a couple of hours cropping them and getting them ready for the pages. Made dinner (I love my spaghetti) and then took the little man child to see Cars. It was really cute. Much better than I thought it would be. Came home and basically just vegged on the couch. Watched Mad TV. I *heart* Mad TV. It cracks me up. It was a repeat episode with Jeff Probst guest starring. At one point there is this guy talking to him about being a "star" and he keeps saying "HNL". Jeff asked what that meant and the guy replied - taking it to a "Ho Nubber Level" - that cracked me up (guess you had to see the show) and for the rest of the weekend I was going around saying "Ooohhh that's the HNL" or "You be takin it to the HNL" or something like that....yeah I know...go ahead....you can say it...it goofy...but I don't care.....I like to entertain myself!

Sunday, tried to sleep in again but that didn't work. Had breakfast and then did a whole bunch (I mean a whole bunch) of eBay stuff. I created new listings. I packaged a bunch of stuff and got it ready for shipping. I watched with excitement as a batch of listings ended and then sent out invoices. I uploaded a new batch of listings. Finally it was decided that there has to be a better way, and yep, I was right, there was. I went to the local office supply place and bought a postal scale and label printer. Now, when I package items, I can weigh them and then do the postage all at one time. No more hand writing the address. No more running to the post office every day because they will come to my house to pick it up. No more huge post office receipts because its all done through paypal and has (ready for this) FREE tracking. So no more of people telling me they didn't get something. OH and when I print the label, paypal automatically emails the buyer and tells them the item has shipped - so no more of anyone emailing and saying "when did you ship that item?". I know, it sounds trivial but I was really happy to get my new toys and it is really going to save me a lot of time.

Sunday evening went for a looooooong walk (at a brisk pace I might add). I was bad this weekend in the food department. So I will be surprised if I haven't gained a pound or two back when I weigh in tomorrow. Friday dinner - a big honkin steak. It had been a while since I had one and usually I will eat only half - ummmmm not this time (it was just sooooo good). Saturday dinner - Spaghetti. I can make some mean spaghetti sauce and yeah, my serving was a little bigger than it should have been. Sunday - not quite as bad - I had garlic and red pepper shrimp with sour slaw (and if you have never had this you are missing out big time), hush puppies (its a southern thing), a few fries. The shrimp and slaw isn't that bad but it was more of a quantity thing. So its back to being good this week. I have lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the house so it shouldn't be hard. I don't mind being bad on some meals I just have to remember not to do it the entire weekend....hehe.

I have a busy week planned so I am sure this week will fly by.

A note to my niece and nephew on their Graduation

Tiffany and Brandon - I am very proud of both of you. I am sorry that I cannot be there to share your special day. I will be thinking of you and love you lots!

I always loved this....and thought I would share.



Wear sunscreen.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind, you will never understand the power and the beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in twenty years you will look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future, or worry knowing that worrying is as affective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindsides you at 4 PM on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you. Sing. Don't be reckless with other peoples' hearts; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealously, sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters; throw away your old bank statements. Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to knees, you'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the "Funky Chicken" on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own. Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions even if you don't follow them. Do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go but a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps between geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.

Live in northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders. Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse, but you'll never know when either one will run out. Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're forty, it will look eighty-five.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.

Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off,

painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Thursday Thirteen - Time to suck up!

It has been a bit of a tough week here at the Cheeky homestead and well I think that there needs to be a little sucking up. After all, who wouldn't want to be in Cheeky's good graces??? So this week's Thursday Thirteen....Thirteen ways to suck up to Cheeky....

#1 - Go out of your way to say something nice about Cheeky. What's that you say? I look particularly bubbly (pretty, lovely, insert something good here) today? Why Thank you....

#2 - Treat Cheeky to a day at the spa. What's that you say? I have been working to hard and I need to take some time for me?

#3 - Make Cheeky a fabulous seafood dinner just because you know she is going through withdrawals. Oh! What's this? You made lobster just for me?

#4 - Cart rest of the family out of the house on a weekend day so I can spend some time paying attention to her addiction - scrapbooking. Oh! Ya'll are heading out on a day trip so I can finally get all those photos in an album....how nice.

#5 - Hire someone to come and do a serious deep clean on the house. Who's this at my door? Stanley Steamer to come and do my carpets (or another company to do the hardwoods) and Merry Maids to deep clean? Oh, you shouldn't have! (read: yes you should).

#6 - Take Cheeky to Vegas! What's that? A plane ticket? My bags are already packed and there is a car at the door?

#7 - Do something without being asked to do it (this one sorta goes for the kiddos). Oh, you already took the trash out by the road? Wow! (read: how much $$ do you want and where do you want to go?)

#8 - Let Cheeky watch her movie instead of the game (and join her while she watches). Oh! Do I want some popcorn? Air popped instead of that microwave stuff?

#9 - Relieve Cheeky of her taxi duties for the week. Oh! You are going to take the kids here and pick them up there?

#10 - Show up with flowers because you know that I like them around the house. - Oh! What a beautiful bouquet of freshly cut tulips (or flower of the season). You shouldn't have (read: yes you should).

#11 - Tell Cheeky how proud you are of her for being more healthy and losing 14 pounds instead of saying "well if you did this it would happen faster"....

#12 - Send Cheeky a (funny, sweet, romantic, etc) card in the mail so she has something for her that isn't an invoice waiting to be paid. Oh what's that colorful envelope in the mailbox?

#13 - Give Cheeky a gift - when all else fails - Rubies and Diamonds make everything better!!

I was tagged......

And I am just getting around to doing it. Last week I was tagged with this by Jenn because she needed someone to harrass (just kidding). So, here it is, almost a week later and I am just getting around to doing it - see I told you I procrastinate (see the last post).

I am going to be on a deserted island and I have to pick my favorites to bring along with me. My 3 favorite:

Books: Oh now this is a hard one. I love to read but I mean you can read a good book over and over but it has to keep your attention if its the only thing you have.

#1 - Gone with the Wind - yes the book because as I read it I can also replay the movie in my mind (see - 2 things in one).

#2 - The Iliad/Odyssey by Homer - has all the great elements - sci fi, a love story, mythology. Wonderful!

#3 - I guess it would be the Bible - not so much for religion sake but to just sit down and read it cover to cover - never done that.

Movies: Now this really is a hard one - I mean come on....there are soooo many to choose from here.

#1 - Steel Magnolias - Love it!(what true southern woman wouldn't?) I aspire to be Weezer one day - she is my hero.

#2 - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and yes the extended versions - These are really great movies - We had a marathon showing of these movie when we moved and drove from SC to MN and we still had time to spare (now that is one loooooooong ride my friends).

#3 - Grease - cause well - I gotta sing!


Albums: Oh now this is a tough one for me - I am always singing something.

#1 - Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet or New Jersey - its a toss up. Really ANYTHING by Bon Jovi. So much of his music could be a soundtrack to my life (each one definately has memories for me).

#2 - Prince - Greatest Hits - cause ya know - a girl has to be funky every now and then.

#3 - Would have to be a mixed CD of 80's music!


People: Assuming this means anyone outside my immediate family. This is a hard one (I know I keep saying that but come on people). Do I go with celebrity or sustanance?

#1 - My girl Kirsten from SC - we have been friends since the second grade. Grew up together in NC and then as fate would have it, we ended up in SC together as well.

#2 - My girl George (ok her name is Melanie - but the last movie we saw together before she moved away was My Best Friend's Wedding - and the character George (played by Rupert Everett) really symbolized what we are to each other. I am her George and she is my George!)

#3 - OK OK I give in to the pressure - Matthew McConaughey - I mean come on - he finally got rid of the Penelope chic and I love to hear him talk and someone has to do the heavy lifting and bongo playing!

Celebrate Good Times - Come On! The 100th Post

In honor of my 100th post I thought I would give you 100 facts about the Cheekster!

1. I am a serious goofball.
2. I miss roadrunner cartoons on Saturday mornings.
3. I am in desperate need of a mani/pedi (I think I will treat myself today)
4. I am a better friend to some people than they are to me.
5. I am tender-hearted to a fault....cry at the drop of a hat.
6. I love scented candles but many of them give me a headache.
7. I take way too much crap from people.
8. I have always struggled with my weight (and probably always will).
9. I love a good book - nothing particularly trashy but nothing too deep either.
10. I cry at movies.
11. I have a wild imagination.
12. I really didn't want to buy the leather furniture in my den - but now I love it!
13. I really don't like painting - but I find myself wanting to paint my bedroom.
14. I have been in this house for 6 months and the walls are still bare.
15. I am on medication for "female issues".
16. Those meds give me serious mood issues.
17. So I am on meds to counteract the effects of the other meds.
18. I hate being on meds.
19. I love my doggie like a child.
20. I love my kitty - and she loves me too - she just doesn't want me to know.
21. I have a strange intuition. I just know things.
22. I don't sleep before someone in my family dies (this started when my Grandmother died when I was young and has been happening ever since). If they die from an illness sometimes I don't sleep for very long periods of time. If it is sudden, I only lose a couple days sleep. I never know who it is - but the moment they die (literally) - I sleep.
23. My not sleeping before someone dies has only jumped family lines 3 times (2 with one person and 1 with another - both of these people are really close to me).
24. I procrastinate way too much.
25. I am not a neat freak but there are times having too much clutter gets on my last nerve.
26. I hated cleaning my bedroom as a kid and I still hate it.
27. I love a good long bubble bath (without interruptions).
28. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
29. I don't plan on growing up.
30. I am a big time carnivore - I love a big fat honkin steak.
31. I am very sensitive to the sulfites in wine - hence a little goes a loooong way with me..hehe.
32. I have dreams in color.
33. I have had my IQ tested and I am a pretty smart cookie (well, at least on paper).
34. I was a natural light blonde until after the birth of my son. Now I am a dark blonde - with highlights (since the red didn't work...ugh)
35. I have a birthmark on the back of my neck just under my hair line. You can only see it if I wear my hair up or if it is really short.
36. I am part Cherokee Indian.
37. Last summer I had a big argument with my SIL and have not spoken to her since.
38. I have a crazy sense of humor.
39. I am a gamer - love roll playing games - The Warcraft Series, The Diablo Series, The Starcraft Series (yeah I love Blizzard games) and most recently Guild Wars.
40. I have some serious addictions: scrapbookking, CSI (Vegas), House. Gaming.
41. I love the summer time when I don't have to worry about missing my shows because they are on hiatus.
42. I hate the summer time cause there is nothing good on TV.
43. Once upon a time I used to be tan, now I just burn
44. I love music - and can play many instruments
45. I love to sing - but I am the only one that loves it when I do.
46. I vowed to never drive more than 2 states away - I broke that vow when I moved to MN.
47. It is amazing the amount of love I have for my children.
48. I have never been into "designers" I just like to buy things that look good and are comfortable and are reasonably priced.
49. I love sandals!
50. I love that I am able to work from home. When this ends it will be my choice if I want to work or not - I like having this option.
51. I have lived in 4 states but moved 9 times in the last 15 years.
52. I was scared to death as a teenager - I had a stalker that knew about me (and a few others from my class). He knew where I worked, he knew where I went to high school, he knew who I dated, he knew that I was also taking courses at night at the local community college - He was also just recently released from jail.
53. I used to be able to speed read - I was clocked at over 2000 words per minute with 95% comprehension - I can't do that any more - but I still read quickly.
54. I liked going to school - I am considering going back for my Master's or perhaps just to take courses of things that interst me.
55. I like art but sometimes I just don't get it.
56. I watch The Young and the Restless.
57. I can be selfish at times - but on the other hand I find myself giving up things I want to do to please others.
58. I love my Nissan Altima - with the 3.5 liter engine.
59. I was the son my Daddy never had - so I fish, can shoot a bow and arrow, have worked on cars.
60. I love going crabbing and shrimping.
61. I am still friends with the very first person I met on the very first day of kindergarten.
62. I regret that I have had to move my daughter around so much. She is strong, and makes friends easily and has experienced more than most her age - but I want her to be able to stay put for a while.
63. I have been facinated with all things related to space - I watch as many shuttle launches as possible.
64. I saw John Glenn take off on the shuttle live and in person - it was amazing.
65. I am excited that sometimes you can see the Northern Lights from where I live now - I haven't seen them yet - but excited that I might
66. I have a facination with storms (hurricanes, tornados, etc). Mother nature is one bad mamma jamma.
67. I sometimes give in to my children too often - I don't say no just for the sake of saying no.
68. I used to have a pet squirrel as a kid.
69. I am a sucker for colorful or "different" pens or writting instruments - I have every color shape and size - I missed my calling I should have worked for Pilot or Sanford.
70. I love the South.
71. I am not now nor have I ever been a racist.
72. I root for the underdog.
73. I say Pe"can" not Pe"khan".
74. I don't cuss in front of my kids but I do it a lot under my breath.
75. I wonder who will remember me and what those memories will be like.
76. I like "people watching" - its an interesting sport.
77. As much as I don't like being cold - there is nothing more beautiful that the morning after a freshly fallen snow (before the kids get footprints everywhere).
78. For me, its all about the little things in life and being considerate.
79. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year and I still listen to my Elvis/Jim Reeves album every year.
80. I sometimes wonder how other people see me.
81. I love eating kid cereal - My all time favorites are Count Chocula and Boo Berry!
82. I am a sucker for jewelrey with rubies and diamonds.
83. I had a really great unique black onyx ring that I loved - the jeweler ran off with it when I was getting it repaired.
84. I love love love coffee!
85. I want to travel more (not move - travel).
86. I love good horror movies.
87. When I was young my family would work with the optimist club and run the haunted house - that was serious fun.
88. My daughter was the first female child born with our last name in 50 years.
89. I am very patriotic.
90. The older I get the more I feel like we as citizens need to be more active in our government.
91. I love comics and superheroes - As a child I had a Spiderman album with story book - it was awesome - I wonder if mom still has it?
92. I wish I could draw/paint.
93. I love going barefoot.
94. I have a huge scar on the bottom of my left foot from when I was 4 years old.
95. I have never had any "major" surgeries.
96. I grind my teeth really hard when I sleep.
97. I love candle light.
98. I am learning to say "no" more often
99. My favorite ice cream is Bryers Vanilla Bean
100. I am a clutz with starting a fire in the fireplace or woodstove (you should see the scars on my hands).

Number 99....

Tomorrow is my 100th post (I thought it was going to be today but there is a "draft" that was never published so this one is officially 99). I was thinking over the weekend about what I could do in honor of my 100th episode...er post. And while I am still contemplating exactly what I am going to do...I thought I would incorporate info about the Cheekster. So here is your chance....ask me anything you want and all will be revealed tomorrow.

OK on to the weekend events....

Friday night the teenage daughter made me proud - I never knew that I could enjoy being wrong so much. Let me give you the scenario. A friend comes home with the teenage daughter from school. She immediately starts doing her chores without being told (yeah, she wants something). After all was done, she asked me if I would take them to go play putt putt and then could she stay the night with her friend. Umm sure, its Friday why not. So she packs and then starts getting ready for putt putt - (you know teenagers, they can't even go outside to check the mail unless everything is in place). So its almost 7 and I take them to the friend's house to drop off their stuff and then on to the putt putt place. I had some errands to run and then I got this strange feeling (I have learned to listen to this instinct)....something wasn't right. I got the feeling that the teenage daughter was trying to pull a fast one but I had no proof and she hasn't really done that before but still there was this feeling. So, on my way back home I drove past the putt putt place and she and her friend were there having a good time. Whew. Fast forward a few hours. Her dad is trying to call her on the cell phone and she isn't answering - as a matter of fact, she has it turned off. Ummm interesting. He of course starts thinking the worst and because I had that "feeling" I was concerned too. It was 9p and they should be back at the friend's house by now. I called - the Mom was out to pick them up. OK, good. But no sooner than I hang up the phone and walk downstairs, the phone is ringing...its the teenage daughter. Hmm that is a little suspicious. How did she know to call. Who called and told them to call me? What number was she reached at since she didn't have her cell on? There were a few too many unanswered questions, I told her she was coming home - now. She gets here and the friend's mom comes in and explains that after putt putt they went to dairy queen and then walked with some other friends to their house. The friend's mom was fully aware of what was going on. I am totally cool with that. I did however still have a problem with her cell phone and the battery conveniently being dead (this happens all the time - it happens again, the phone is gone - permanently). The other mom was really great and knew exactly what we were feeling which is why she felt the need to explain.
It all worked out - the teenage daughter did spend the night with her friend and all is well this time (I really like being wrong in these situations - score one for the daugther!).

Saturday - lots of errands then late in the day we headed out to the lake for a little while. Had a great time. Stopped by Dairy Queen on the way home. I *heart* Dairy Queen.

Sunday - Went to see the X-Men movie - LOVED IT! I saw an interview with Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) on Friday and he was very adamant about saying this was the last movie. Now, I am not going to give anything away BUT - it is left WIDE OPEN for another one. I hope they do make one - I really love these movies. Got home and made an early dinner and then everyone left to go out to the races. I stayed home and enjoyed the quiet and got all of my paperwork printed out for today's interviews.

Got up this morning and it was time to step on the scales again. I only do this once a week. Last week I neither lost nor gained which I thought was really good considering the crap I ate over the holiday weekend. Today was the moment of truth and I have to say I am still very very pleased. As of this morning I have officially lost 14 pounds!!!! It has been several weeks (still averaging about 3 pounds a week) but its due to my choices. I am not denying myself. I just try to keep it in moderation as much as possible. Seeing myself still losing a couple of pounds a week is great motivation to keep up the healthier choices. And when I do get those cravings, I reach for the healthier item. I still really haven't incorporated exercise and I know that I am going to have to do it eventually when I hit a plateau. And I will.

Wow, this turned out to be a pretty long post.

SPF - All that Shimmers......

Hey kids - you know what time it is??? That's right - It's Stuff Portrait Friday the wonderfully talented Kristine wants to see our stuff again (hmmmm you think she's "casing the joint"?...hehe). This week its about the stuff that sparkles, that's dull, and colorful.

Yes, I found a way to make my kids part of SPF yet again. Look at those eyes! They totally sparkle! This is an older picture but one of my favorites.

This is a picture of the teenage daughter and her friend at a joint b-day party for me and my Dad (our b-day's are 3 days apart). We had a genuine Carolina pig pickin. The daughter apparently thought things were a little too dull for her....



Something Colorful.....



This is a picture of the sky outside my house just last night. The picture really doesn't do it justice - it was really amazing.




As I was looking for a good colorful pic I came across this one. This is one of the teenage daugter's teammates from softball in SC. Just 2 days before she took a direct hit with a softball to her eye. OUCH! Where the skin is broken, that is from the stitches in the ball. OUCH again! She took it like a trooper. Not me - I would have been blubbering like a baby.
